University Festival ☆ 学祭

11月下旬になり、秋も深まってきましたね。
秋といえば、芸術の秋、食欲の秋、スポーツの秋…
日本にはたくさんの秋における表現があります！

そして、文化の秋！
文化！　
文化？
文化祭？
文化祭！

東京には大学がいっぱい！そして、私も大学生ということもあり、学祭を楽しんできました(^^) 
学祭は、第二次世界大戦前から行われ、戦後から近年のような形態で行われるようになったそうです。海外にはあまり見られない、日本の年中行事の一つである学祭！
今回は、４つの大学の学祭をご紹介します！




It becomes to late November. Fall is in full swing!
In Japan, there is many representations of fall because autumn is a perfect season to have a good appetite, art, and sports etc.

And one of representation is "season for culture"!
culture! culture? Cultural festival ? Cultural festival!

"Cultural festival" is called “bunkasai” in Japanese, and especially "university festival" is called “daigaku-sai”. “Daigaku” means university and “sai” means festival in Japanese. Daigaku-sai started before WWⅡ, and it is an event held by most universities around Culture Day (November 3), Japanese national holiday. Daigaku-sai is the good opportunity each year for students to see and express their activities, so student display or perform their works. Moreover, a variety of projects are held by students in daigaku-sai, such as talk show by a famous person, concerts by singers, contests such as “Miss campus”, entrance examination briefing etc.

There are so many universities at Tokyo ! I'm a university student, so I visited and enjoyed some daigaku-sai. It is not seen too much overseas, which is one of Japan's annual events. !Today I introduce 4 daigaku-sai!

10月31日はハロウィ－ン！

ということで、今回は日本のことから離れて、私がアメリカで経験したハロウィンをご紹介したいと思います！

October 31th is Halloween!
So I write about Halloween I experienced in the U.S.!

①仮装パティー

大学では仮装コンテスト・パーティーが行われました。その日は大学中を衣装に身を包んだ人が歩いています笑　驚くほどのクオリティーの高さ！

月見3点セット ☆ Moon three-piece set

 9月28日は、月が地球に最も近づき、満月が今年一番大きく見える「スーパームーン」が見られる日でした！そして10月25日は十三夜！

ということで、今回は、日本ではおなじみのお月見の際にセットとなる、あの3つについて紹介したいと思います。

September 28, it was the day we can look at “Super Moon,” the full moon is biggest in this year because the moon approaches most to the Earth! Did you look at it? ：）And October 25 is a waxing gibbous!

So, today I want to introduce about three things which are familiar in Japan.  

①    団子

収穫への祈りや感謝のため、収穫物である米の団子を月見の日にお供えしたのが月見団子の由来だと考えられています。月にお供えものをするのは、月が信仰の対象であったためで、この習慣は江戸時代中期にはじまったようです。

月見団子は、満月に見立てているだけでなく健康や幸福も表し、そのお団子を食べることで、健康と幸せを得ることができると考えられています。

また、白くて丸い団子だけでなく、地域によって異なる月見団子があります。

①    Dumpling

It is said the origin of moon dumpling is that people offer dumpling because of prayer and gratitude to harvest. Japanese offered dumplings to the moon because Japanese had faith in the moon. This custom started since the mid-Edo period.

Dumpling represents not only the full moon but also health and happiness, and it is thought that it is possible to get happiness and health by eating dumplings.

In addition, there are not only round and white dumplings but also various dumplings in each region.

②    ススキ

お月見のススキは、月の神様を招く「憑代」として供えられます。本来、月の神様の憑代は稲穂ですが、お月見の時期に稲穂が無かったため、稲穂に似たススキを供えるようになったといわれています。

また、古くからススキには魔除けの力があるといわれ、お月見に供えたススキを軒先に吊るすと一年間病気をしないという言い伝えも残っているそうです。

②Japanese pampas grass

Japanese pampas grass for the moon viewing is offered as a “yorishiro (spirit-dwelling object)” which leads to God of the moon. Originally, yorishiro for God of the moon is ear of rice, but rise’ season is not in the time. So, it is said people began to offer Japanese pampas grass to the moon because it is similar to ear of rice.

In addition, it is said Japanese pampas grass has the power protecting people from harm since ancient times. Moreover it is said that people don’t have a disease one year if they hung Japanese pampas grass in the eaves which was offered at moon-viewing night.

③    うさぎ

日本には古くから、月にうさぎが住んでいて餅つきをするという伝説があります。

この伝説は、インドのジャータカ神話と中国の神話が由来していると言われています。

古代中国では、月のうさぎは杵を持って不老不死の薬をついていると考えられていました。

これが日本に伝わってから

1.    日本で満月を表す言葉の「望月」が転じて

2.    お米が収穫できたことに対する感謝や喜びの意味が込められて

といった理由で「餅つき」に変化したと言われています。

③ Rabbit

From ancient times in Japan, there is a legend that a rabbit live in the moon and it makes the rice cake. This legend is said its origin is from Jataka mythology of India and Chinese mythology. In ancient China, a rabbit living in the moon was thought that it makes the medicine of immortality.

After this story was transmitted to Japan, it changed to the “rice cake” in next reasons;

1.     “Mochizuki” which represents the full moon in Japan changed

2.     To represent gratitude and joy that there is a good harvest

以上、団子、ススキ、ウサギの３つが日本のお月見には欠かせないものです。

最近はハロウィーンに押されている印象を受けますが、それでもお月見をする習慣は引き継がれています。自然の美しさを楽しむ日本の文化の一つとしてこれからも残っていってほしいものです（＾＾）

Therefore, those three things are indispensable for the moon viewing in Japan.

Recently, I feel moon-viewing is pushed from Halloween, however, some Japanese keep enjoying moon-viewing today! I want to remain the moon-viewing as one of Japanese custom to enjoy the beauty of nature：）

中秋の名月 ☆ Harvest Moon

Night wind is becoming cool and autumn is coming!

August 27 was “chushu no meigetsu” (harvest moon)! So I would like to write about it.

夜風が大分涼しくなって、秋めいてきました。

そして、昨日の9月27日は中秋の名月でした！ということで、今回は中秋の名月についてです。

In Japan, we call the night moon on August 15 according to the old calendar “chushu no meigetsu (harvest moon).”

The reasons are

①    in Japan long time ago, July, August, and September in the old calendar ( August, September, and October in the current calendar ) were the autumn. August of old calendar was called “chushu (mid-autumn),” especially August 15 in the old calendar (the middle of the autumn) was called “chushu” (this “chushu” is used different Chinese character of “chushu (mid-autumn).”

②     dry air from the continent come on August of the old calendar, so sky become clear and moon light become more bright. “Meigetsu” means the moon on August 15 in the old calendar and the beautiful moon.

日本では、旧暦8月15日の夜の月のことを「中秋の名月」と呼びます。

それは、

①    昔の日本では、旧暦7・8・9月（現在の暦の8・9・10月頃）を「秋」としており、旧暦8月を「仲秋」、特に旧暦8月15日（秋の真ん中の日）を「中秋」と呼ぶため

②    旧暦8月は大陸の乾燥した空気が流れ込んできて、空の透明度が良くなり、一層月の光が冴えるため

これらの理由から、その日に見える月を「中秋の名月」と呼びます。

“Chushu no meigetsu (harvest moon)” is familiar to Japanese: for example, it is called “Jugoya Otsuki-san (the moon of the15th night)”and it is sung in the children’s songs. In addition, there are the customs that Japanese make dango and eat them with looking at the moon.

中秋の名月は「十五夜お月さん」と呼ばれたり、童謡に歌われたりして、日本では親しまれています。また、この日にはお団子をお供えする、あるいは食べて、お月見をする習慣もあります。

By the way, people in English-speaking countries call the full moon in the same season “Harvest Moon” or “Hunter's moon”.

ちなみに、英語圏では同時期の満月を「Harvest Moon」や「Hunter's moon」というそうです。

Why don’t you look at the moon with listening to the sound of insects, and feel the autumn?：）

夏休み☆ SUMMER VACATION

海、山、花火にBBQ …　皆さんこの夏をいかがお過ごしですか？（＾＾）/

今回のテーマは夏休み！小学校から大学の夏季休業について書いていきたいと思います。

Sea, mountain, fireworks, and BBQ…  How do you spend this summer?

Today’s topic is “summer vacation”! I write about summer vacation from elementary schools to universities in Japan.

まず、日本の小中学校、高校では7月下旬から8月下旬、大学では8月上旬から9月下旬が夏季休業となります。（各学校によって多少異なります）

日本の教育機関の場合、その目的は

1、 夏季の暑熱の回避

2、 家業手伝い（農業・自営業）を行いやすくするため

3、 夏季の伝統的な慣習の存在（お盆などの仏教行事）

4、 通常授業実施中には行いにくい校務（教員採用試験等）の実施

5、 教職員の休業

などのようです。

First, elementary schools, junior high schools and high schools in Japan have summer vacation from late July to late August, and universities in Japan have summer vacation from early August to late September. (It varies slightly depending on each school.)

In the case of the Japanese educational institutions, the purposes of summer vacation are

1. to avoid summer heat

2. to facilitate help with their family business ( agriculture or self-employed )

3. to participate in the traditional customs ( Buddhist events such as the Bon Festival )

4. to execute school affairs which is difficult to do in usually days ( teacher recruitment examination etc.)

5. to rest teachers

etc.

そして、日本の小中学生・高校生には、夏休みの宿題があります！

ドリル（問題集）、読書感想文、自由研究…　（懐かしい！笑）

Moreover, there are summer homework in elementary school, junior high school, and high school. Drill (exercise books), book report, the independent research ... (nostalgic! Lol)

また、夏休み期間中にも登校日があり、戦争や平和について考える授業を行う学校もあります。

In addition, there are some school days during the summer vacation. Most school give classes to think about war and peace.

ちなみに、私が留学していたアメリカの場合、

学事年度が9月開始のため、それまでの2 - 3か月間が夏休みの期間となる州もあるそうです。宿題はなく、その代わりとして「サマースクール」を開講する学校もあるそうです。

そして、アメリカの夏休みの起源は面白い！

20世紀初頭、当時、脳は筋肉で出来ていると考えられていたそうです。手足を酷使し過ぎると怪我につながるように、勉強のし過ぎは脳の発達に悪影響とみなされたため、夏休みが設けられたとされるとか！（Wikipedia参照）

By the way, in the case of the United States that I studied abroad,

Academic Affairs Year starts on September, so 2 - 3 months are summer vacation in some states. No homework. Some states offer "Summer School" as an alternative of it.

The origin of American summer vacation is interesting!

Early 20th century, people thought the brain was made of muscle. As abusing the limbs leads to injuries, it was considered that studying too much had a negative effect on the development of the brain. This is one reason summer vacation started! (reference: Wikipedia)

私がアメリカで通っていた大学は4学期制でしたので、

春学期：4月‐6月上旬　　      　2週間休み

夏学期：7月‐8月下旬　　   　　4週間休み

秋学期：9月下旬‐12月上旬　 3週間休み

という感じでした。

My university in the United States has quarter system, so below is my year’s schedule.

Spring: April to early June                         2 weeks holidays

Summer: July to late August                     4 weeks holidays

Fall: late September to early December   3 weeks holidays

夏季休業の期間や宿題の有無によって、各国の制度や国柄が出ていて面白い！

休みの期間よりも時間の使い方次第で有意義なものになりそうですね！(^^)

It is interesting we can see national systems and national character by each country’ period and homework of summer vacation!

It is going to be a meaningful time depending on how we use time than the period of holidays:)
